Crossing the 400 wickets mark in ODI cricket is no small feat. One needs to be exceptionally skillful and consistent in the game. Only a few of such bowlers have accomplished this milestone. Interestingly, all of the achievers belong to two South Asian countries, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

In this list, we pay tribute to those legends who hold the record of the fastest 400 wickets in ODI cricket.


#4 Chaminda Vaas


Another Sri Lankan player who holds the distinction for this achievement. Chaminda Vaas surpassed the mark of 400 wickets in the ODI in 322 knockouts. He entered the league of the 400 wickets taker in the match versus India in 2008 on the Columbo cricket ground. Often considered as Sri Lanka’s best fast bowler, his exemplary bowling figures gained him multitudinous records.

Vaas has a fabulous bowling average of 27.53 in the ODI format, thanks to his perfectly balanced line and length. He is also known for being the youngest bowler to have crossed the mark of 400 wickets in ODI.


#3 Wasim Akram


Unparalleled in his swing bowling, Wasim Akram gained the appellation of the ‘Sultan of Swing’. The southpaw along with Waqar Younis formed the most formidable hunting duo of the Pakistan cricket team. He holds the recognition of taking 23 4-wickets hauls in 356 ODI matches.

The second Pakistani cricketer in this list of the fastest 400 wickets in ODI. It was in the tri-series match against Australia on 19 January 2000 when Akram reached this landmark.


#2 Muttiah Muralitharan


He is appraised for being the best bowler of the longest format of the game. His career has rather been full of controversies, facing accusations of being a swindler. However, this didn’t hold back the star bowler from being a record-holding wicket-taker.

Muttiah Muralitharan vaunts of a splendid statistical record of his cricketing career. Maestro of spin bowling, the former Sri Lankan player stands second in the list of taking the fastest 400 wickets in ODI. Although, in terms of duration, he took the least number of years in acquiring this feat. He completed his 400 scalps in a total of 263 matches.


#1 Waqar Younis


Nightmare of batsmen on the field, Pakistan cricket team’s gem Waqar Younis was a force to be reckoned with. Calling him one of the most talented bowlers of all time would be an understatement. Since he had manipulated the use of the old ball, Waqar skillfully mastered his reverse swing and developed the ability to deliver both inswings and outswings. Reverse swing coupled with an extravagant speed greatly assisted him in stumping record wickets. Furthermore, he also possessed the ability to bowl bouncers with absolute efficiency.

‘The Toe Crusher’ played a total of 282 ODI matches and in his 252nd match became the fastest bowler to triumph the 400 wickets in ODI title.
