IPL Best Opening Pairs

#5) Murali Vijay and Michael Hussey (Chennai Super Kings)


The best and most consistent opening pair in IPL, Murali Vijay and Michael Hussey is that pair that has more scored more than 1000 runs in IPL. Not only they were consistent and aggressive at the top of the order but their approach was also too hot to handle.

They played an important role in CSK’s title win in 2011. The duo had eight half-century stand and two-century stands in 28 games. Their highest partnership score is 159 at an average close to 41.

#4) Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir (former Delhi Daredevils)

The Delhi duo played for three years for the former Delhi Daredevils team and were really effective in the powerplay.

Sehwag’s ability to score for fun and Gambir’s calmness provided Delhi a good opening partnership. The partnership aggregated 732 runs in 2010 which was one of the best seasons for Delhi Daredevils in the tournament history.

#3) Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith (Chennai Super Kings)


One of the most lethal batting partnerships to ever have played in Indian Premier League, Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith were the duo who feared the opposition. Though they made it into the team in 2014 for the Yellow Army, they started on a higher note. The first-century stand came against KXIP and there was no looking back since then.

The players not only were helpful for Chennai Super Kings but also continued their partnership for Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017. Both completed each other well with their different batting techniques.

#2) Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa (Kolkata Knight Riders)


Despite having the likes of Brendon McCullum and Chris Gayle in their team, Kolkata were struggling to win the Indian Premier League. It was not only the acquisition of Gautam Gambhir but it was also the signing of Robbin Uthappa that helped them to win the title.

#1) Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad)


Sunrisers Hyderabad are an exception to the norm set in IPL. It is the bowling heavy side that has defended the lowest of the targets in the cash-rich league. Though the team had the best openers like Shikhar Dhawan, David Warner and Kane Williamson, it is the bowlers that have done the majority of the work for Sunrisers. However, it is the partnership of Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner that has helped the Sunrisers to score huge totals in the past.

One of the best opening pairs in IPL have amassed four-century opening stands and the one against Gujarat Lions is always memorable. They scored 137 runs against Gujarat Lions in Qualifier 2 which eventually helped them to win the title in 2016.
